How to Make a Room Look Bigger

Struggling with keeping a small space from looking cramped and overcrowded? We've all been there. Whether it's a new studio apartment, that small room in your house you never knew what to do with, or even a dorm room, often there will be a time when you wish you just had a little more space in a room.
While you may not be able to (or want to pay) to widen the walls of your little space, thankfully there are a number of furniture and color tactics that can make the most of your small room.
1. Add Some Mirrors
Incorporating mirrors is a great way to make a room feel larger. Not only does the reflective quality make the space look bigger, but having mirrors all around you house is great for being able to quickly check your teeth ( never know when you have a stray piece of food hanging up there).
Adding mirrors is especially great when putting them in a room with limited lighting. This is because the mirrors will work to reflect any light coming in and allow it to bounce around the room.
Here are a couple of different ideas for mirrors. As you can see, in both the light and dark rooms the mirrors help to reflect a ton of light into the space! Check out my Pinterest boards for more inspo!
2. High, Floor Length Curtains for Windows
If you are faced with a small room that also has short ceilings, then floor-length curtains are a great option for creating the illusion of height in a room. Opt for curtains that are a lighter color with a slightly see-through appearance for the best look. This allows for the most light to filter into the room.
Now, if you already have some mirrors in there also, the light will be bouncing off those like a disco ball!
Here are some pins showcasing this idea! I particularly love the stringy tassel one! It has such a pretty, boho vibe and adds a unique look to the space. It reminded me of the Boho Me Crazy Tassel Wall Tapestry that I make!

3. Tall Furniture
Similar to the idea of floor-length curtains, tall, streamlined furniture can add height to a room. Tall furniture can help to elongate the walls, making it look like your're working with higher ceilings.
However, avoid using chunky pieces in smaller spaces. While they can be cute, it'll only cramp up the small room more. Better to save those types of pieces for the bigger rooms and stick to the streamlined look for little areas.
Here are some visuals from Pinterest of what we're talking about.
4. Use Contrasting Colors
Color can make a huge difference in how the size of your room looks. Properly combining and placing your light and dark colors will add depth and dimension to the room. Darker colors will add depth to an area of the room, while a lighter color will work to bounce off any light.
5. Paint the Room a Light Color
Going off the idea of using darker colors to create dimension, painting a room a light neutral color is a great and inexpensive way (read more about cheap decorating hacks here) to make a room look larger!
